Abstract

This article focuses on the biblical story of the Samaritan woman at the well, traditionally portrayed as sinful but here reconsidered as a compassionate and insightful figure named Photini. It highlights how Jesus engages her with understanding, addressing her complex marital history in a culturally sensitive way and offering "living water" as a metaphor for spiritual renewal. Photini recognizes Jesus as the Messiah and becomes a key evangelist, leading her community to faith, making her one of the most successful evangelists in the Gospels besides Jesus himself. The article emphasizes the importance of reexamining traditional interpretations and acknowledges the Eastern Church’s veneration of Photini as a saint.
