Abstract

This article focuses on the new critical edition of Gavin Douglas's 1513 Scots translation of Virgil's *Aeneid*, known as the *Eneados*. Edited by Priscilla Bawcutt and Ian C. Cunningham and published by the Scottish Text Society, this three-volume edition corrects flaws in the previously authoritative edition by David F. C. Coldwell and surpasses the 2011 modern edition by Gordon Kendal. It is praised for its fidelity to the Cambridge manuscript, clear presentation, and comprehensive variant readings from multiple manuscripts and early prints, making it the most reliable resource for Douglas's work to date. The edition also honors the late Bawcutt's scholarly legacy, reflecting her rigorous and generous approach to medieval and early modern Scots literature.
