Abstract

This article examines the supervisory challenges encountered in postgraduate theses where students create graphic memoirs as forms of artistic inquiry. It highlights the complexity, emotional demands, and ethical considerations involved in representing the self and others through multimodal narratives that combine writing, imagery, and sound. Drawing on three case studies—a graphic novel exploring ethnicity and sexuality, a podcast addressing mental health, and an allegorical picture book about immigrant exploitation—the article discusses strategies for managing issues of veracity, emotional well-being, and relational ethics in supervision. It emphasizes the need for critical, empathetic supervisory relationships and institutional support to navigate the risks of public self-disclosure inherent in graphic memoir research.
