Abstract

This article focuses on Edwidge Danticat's 2024 essay collection *We're Alone* (Graywolf Press), which blends personal narrative and reportage to explore themes such as Haiti's colonial history, environmental crises, political violence, and motherhood. The collection is divided into two parts: the first honors literary influences like James Baldwin and Toni Morrison, while the second addresses contemporary Haitian struggles, including gang violence and diaspora experiences. Danticat, a Haitian American writer and newly appointed Wun Tsun Tam Mellon Professor of the Humanities at Columbia University, integrates her roles as an artist, mother, and educator, emphasizing the intimate connection between writer and reader. The work also reflects on memory, loss, and resilience, underscoring the ongoing journey of storytelling amid precarity.
