Abstract

This article traces the development and use of the sousaphone—a large, circular, shoulder-carried bass brass instrument—in John Philip Sousa’s concert band from its inception in the late 19th century through the early 20th century. Sousa, a prominent American bandmaster, initially employed upright tubas and helicon tubas but sought a bass instrument with a fuller, more diffused tone suitable for concert settings, leading to the creation of the sousaphone in collaboration with instrument makers J. W. Pepper and later C. G. Conn. The sousaphone evolved through several design milestones, including modifications to its bell orientation and valve system, and became a defining feature of Sousa’s bass section, which at times included multiple sousaphones. The article also documents key sousaphonists in Sousa’s band, the challenges of touring with such large instruments, and the eventual decline of the sousaphone’s prominence in the band following Sousa’s death in 1932.
