Abstract

The article focuses on the discovery and transcription of a previously unknown Elizabethan ballad titled "A Lamentable Songe of the Daugtor of Iephtha," which uniquely tells the biblical story from the daughter's perspective. Topics include the ballad's preservation in an annotated classical text reflecting Tudor-era intersections of pedagogy and popular culture, its probable identification with a long-lost ballad recorded in the Stationers' Register, and the scribal and typographic evidence.
