Abstract
The article reviews "The Exeter Companion to Fairies, Nereids, Trolls and Other Social Supernatural Beings," which presents 15 studies exploring the characteristics and societal structures of various supernatural beings across Europe. The editors propose five criteria for evaluating these societies, including choral actions, hierarchies, shared homes, symbiosis with humans, and distinct personalities. The studies reveal how these supernatural societies often reflect the human cultures surrounding them, with examples ranging from the Irish aes sídhe to the Ukrainian bohyni, highlighting both similarities and differences in their social behaviors and interactions with humans. The collection emphasizes the complexity and richness of folklore, suggesting that supernatural beings serve as mirrors to human society. [Extracted from the article]
