Abstract
The article from Australian Geographic discusses the history of the Barracks Arch in Perth, Western Australia, which was the last remnant of the Pensioner Barracks built in 1866 to house the Enrolled Pensioner Force. These pensioner guards were retired British soldiers who accompanied convicts to WA between 1850 and 1868. The decision to transition WA from a free-settler colony to a penal settlement was controversial, but convicts helped boost the struggling workforce and economy of the colony by working on farms and constructing infrastructure.
