Abstract
The article discusses the decline of democracy since the early 2000s, contrasting the optimism following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 with the current trend of "democratic recession." It highlights the weakening of democratic institutions, such as the rule of law and free speech, and notes that democracies often erode from within through the election of leaders who dismantle democratic norms. The rise of soft fascism, characterized by ultra-nationalism and xenophobia, is attributed to fears surrounding immigration from the Global South. The piece emphasizes the importance of civic education and active participation in democracy as essential tools for preserving liberty. [Extracted from the article]
