Abstract
This review focuses on Katherine Bowers's book *Writing Fear: Russian Realism and the Gothic*, which examines the role of Gothic narrative devices in the development of Russian prose fiction, particularly Realism. Bowers introduces the concept of "gothic realism," highlighting how various Russian authors across the nineteenth century consistently incorporated Gothic elements to explore diverse philosophical and political themes. The book analyzes key texts by authors such as Pushkin, Gogol, Dostoevsky, and Chekhov, and includes case studies addressing social and cultural issues like urban anxiety, the Woman Question, revolutionary terrorism, and family decline. Bowers's work contributes to the emerging field of Russian Gothic studies and offers insights relevant to scholars of both Russian literature and broader Gothic traditions.
