Abstract

Artemisia, the Pirate Princess of Halicarnassus, was a prominent figure during the Battle of Salamis in 480 BCE, where she commanded five ships in Xerxes' navy. Her presence as a female general among Persia's commanders highlighted the stark differences between Greek and Achaemenid cultures regarding women in positions of power. Despite the Persian defeat, Artemisia's reputation remained intact, and she was the only commander retained by Xerxes after the battle. Her story sheds light on the diverse experiences of women in patriarchal societies of ancient times. [Extracted from the article]
