Abstract

This article examines the use of comic books and graphic novels as effective pedagogical tools in teaching sociology, particularly in diverse and community college classrooms. It highlights how comics like *Ms. Marvel* and *Bitch Planet* help students grasp complex sociological concepts such as gender, socialization, and the looking glass self by making these ideas relatable and accessible. A mixed-methods study comparing graphic novels to traditional textbooks found no significant difference in test scores but noted that students engaging with graphic novels demonstrated deeper critical thinking, greater reading completion, and more meaningful understanding of course material. The article also references the HBO series *Watchmen* as an example of how comics can illuminate historical and sociological issues like institutional racism and generational trauma for broader audiences. Overall, the article advocates for incorporating comics and graphic novels to democratize learning and foster sociological imagination in higher education.
