Exploring Writer's Block as Embodied Experience Across the Grades.

Abstract

This article theorizes writer's block as an embodied phenomenon, expanding beyond traditional cognitive explanations to include social, cultural, affective, and material dimensions of writing experiences. Drawing on qualitative research across K–12 and adult contexts, the authors propose a framework with four principles: (1) bodies are key mediums through which writer's block is recognized and expressed; (2) writer's block is socially co-constructed through how others interpret writers' embodied behaviors; (3) writer's block arises from intra-actions among human and nonhuman elements involved in writing; and (4) despite appearing stuck, writers' bodies remain charged with energy and generative potential. This multidimensional perspective challenges deficit views of "struggling writers," particularly marginalized students, and encourages educators and researchers to reconceptualize writer's block as a complex, dynamic process that can foster engagement and creativity rather than solely an obstacle to overcome.
