Abstract

The article inquires whether a mid-18th-century chapbook of prose history held by the Folger Shakespeare Library was a source for the play "Titus Andronicus" by William Shakespeare and George Peele. It considers the argument raised by Marco Mincoff that the prose history was dependent on the Titus ballad, which was dependent upon the play. It discusses similarities and differences between the ballad and play, including the marriage of Lavinia, slaughter, throat-cutting, and pie-baking.
