Abstract

The article analyses the significance of the term Ingwine in Beowulf, arguing that it reflects Hrothgar's authority over multiple Germanic peoples united by the cult of Ing rather than merely the Danes. Topics include linguistic and historical parallels with the Ynglingar and Ingvaeones; textual evidence from Beowulf, Tacitus' Germania, and the Old English Rune Poem; and the Christian poet's possible understanding of this theophoric ethnonym.
