Abstract

The article examines vengeance as a fundamental driving force behind war and terrorism, emphasizing its roots in destructive emotions such as hatred and the desire for revenge. Drawing on historical examples—from early 20th-century Sardinian clan feuds to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel—it highlights how perceived injustices and grievances fuel cycles of retaliatory violence. The piece also discusses the broader socio-political context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, noting the impact of prolonged occupation and restrictions on Palestinians, which contribute to support for armed struggle despite widespread condemnation of attacks on civilians. Ultimately, the article suggests that while vengeance perpetuates conflict, it also underscores a shared human suffering that calls for peace.
