Abstract

The article focuses on the influence of Icelandic folklore on J.R.R. Tolkien's worldbuilding for elves in his fictional works. Topics include the differences between medieval sources and later Icelandic folklore regarding elves, the richness of elf lore found in Jón Árnason's "Icelandic Folklore and Fairy-Tales" that Tolkien would have had access to, and specific similarities between Tolkien's works and the Icelandic sources including elvish writing and culture.
