Abstract

This article analyzes the role of time in autobiographical writing about migration through two memoirs: Roberto Lovato's *Unforgetting: A Memoir of Family, Migration, Gangs, and Revolution in the Americas* and Jose Antonio Vargas's *Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen*. Lovato's memoir intertwines personal and Salvadoran history, addressing cycles of violence and collective memory to advocate for recognition and social change, facilitated by his U.S. citizenship that allows movement across borders and time. In contrast, Vargas's memoir reflects the temporal limbo of being undocumented in the United States, characterized by legal and existential belatedness that restricts both physical mobility and temporal agency, though his advocacy work with Define American seeks to reshape immigration narratives. Both texts use autobiographical memory to challenge dominant migration discourses and envision futures of justice, highlighting how migration experiences complicate linear conceptions of time and identity.
