Abstract
The article focuses on a retrospective examination of Seamus Heaney's collection *North* in the context of its 50th anniversary, presented at a conference. The author reflects on their earlier critiques of *North* and its relationship to the political landscape of 1970s Belfast, noting the absence of a unified perspective on poetry during that time. They argue that *North* does not effectively convey a cohesive sense of "northness" and suggest that Heaney's earlier collection, *Wintering Out*, more accurately captures the ethos of the Troubles. The discussion also highlights the complexities of Heaney's poetic approaches and concludes with a reading of an unpublished poem by Michael Longley, emphasizing the human aspect of historical figures found in bogs.
