Abstract
The article examines the connections between James Fenimore Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans and William Faulkner's Absalom, Absalom! as both explore the "West Indian origin story" and the role of race and heritage in shaping American identity. Topics include the rise of Munro and Sutpen through military service in the West Indies; the creation and impact of the Africanist presence in their children; and the differing resolutions of miscegenation and racial complexity in the two novels.
