Abstract

The article presents the Irish writer-director duo Desperate Optimists discussing their selections for the Greatest Films of All Time poll, highlighting films that have influenced their work and perspectives on identity, storytelling, and cinematic form. Their choices include Stanley Kubrick’s *Barry Lyndon* (1975), noted for its painterly depiction of Ireland and themes of identity; Billy Wilder’s *Sunset Blvd.* (1950), praised for its bold narrative structure; and David Lynch’s *Blue Velvet* (1986), recognized for its unsettling and dreamlike storytelling. They also reflect on Chantal Akerman’s *Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles* (1975) for its demanding and immersive style, and other films such as *The Red Shoes* (1948), *Paris Is Burning* (1990), and *Maeve* (1981), emphasizing their emotional impact, cultural significance, and innovative cinematic techniques.
