Abstract
The author recalls her experience of translating the two haiku of Chinese-American author Maxine Hong Kingston, "Malu Cycles" and "Chinese Time." She notes that the haiku's origins could be traced back to the influence of classical Chinese poetry, although it is distinctively Japanese. She also notes the difference of English and Chinese languages in sound, form, and origin. She also recalls and difficulties and enjoyment she felt in translating the haiku.
