Abstract

The article focuses on the world premiere of *A Thousand Splendid Suns*, an opera adaptation of Khaled Hosseini’s novel that explores the lives of two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, enduring oppression and violence. American composer Sheila Silver, who began working on the opera in 2012, incorporated elements of Hindustani music into her Western operatic style to evoke the Afghan setting, while librettist Stephen Kitsakos adapted the narrative to suit operatic form. Seattle Opera commissioned the production, appointing Afghan filmmaker Roya Sadat as director to ensure cultural authenticity, supported by cultural consultant Humaira Ghilzai. The opera aims to portray Afghan women’s resilience and humanity beyond common stereotypes, emphasizing the story’s emotional depth and cultural complexity.
