'I have bits and pieces': Comparing accounts of the Holocaust from survivors and their grandchildren.

Abstract

Grandchildren of Holocaust survivors -- or the third generation -- often retell their grandparents' Holocaust experiences. It is difficult to determine, however, whether grandchildren retell narratives about their grandparents' experiences during the Holocaust in a manner that is consonant with their grandparents' storytelling. Based on five case studies of interviews from separate projects conducted with survivors and their grandchildren living in the United States, this paper argues that these grandchildren retell their grandparents' stories of Holocaust survival in ways that sometimes align with, and other times contradict, how survivors told the same stories. The gaps and overlaps between these grandparents' and grandchildren's perspectives of the Holocaust raise questions about what it means for such grandchildren to be seen -- by themselves and others -- as the bearers of the 'lessons' or 'legacies' of the Holocaust. This paper argues that the methodology used to analyse the storytelling of grandparents and grandchildren can be applied to generational storytelling in other survivor families.
