Abstract

This article analyzes the 2018 video game *Hades* by Supergiant Games, focusing on its narrative design within the rogue-like genre by comparing it to *The Binding of Isaac* and *Dead Cells*. It highlights *Hades*’ layered narrative structure, where players shape multiple independent storylines through gameplay choices, such as gifting and character interactions, which contrasts with the more abstract or minimal narratives in the other two games. The article argues that *Hades* challenges traditional rogue-like conventions by integrating complex storytelling and emotional immersion without sacrificing core gameplay elements like permadeath and procedural generation. Ultimately, it suggests that *Hades* and similar games exemplify an evolving video game genre landscape where narrative and ludic systems increasingly intertwine, blurring established genre boundaries.
