Abstract

The article focuses on the career and contributions of iconic author Isabel Allende. Over her prolific career, Allende has published 31 books, translated into 42 languages, and attributes her writing ritual of starting all books on January 8 to her creative process. Born in 1942 to Chilean-diplomat parents in Peru, she fled Chile after the 1973 military coup and wrote her debut novel, *The House of Spirits*, during her time in Venezuela. Allende's work often explores themes of "pain and love," and she emphasizes the importance of giving voice to marginalized groups, including women and people of color, in her latest novel, *My Name Is Emilia del Valle*.
