Abstract

The article discusses the role of Quaker capitalists in the conquest of the Ohio Valley by the United States. The author argues that religion, specifically Quakerism, played a significant but overlooked role in enabling the growth of the United States. Quaker capitalists, motivated by both profit and philanthropy, built relationships with Indigenous peoples and conducted negotiations on behalf of the U.S. government. The article also highlights the agency of Indigenous peoples in the Ohio Valley, who actively engaged in economic and political power dynamics. The author concludes that the benevolent image cultivated by missionaries and philanthropists helped to mask the violent process of Indigenous dispossession and elevate the American empire.
