Abstract
This article explores contemporary writers’ reflections on the literary influences of past authors, focusing on Ben Okri’s discussion of Nigerian poet-soldier Christopher Okigbo and Katie Kitamura’s insights on Italian essayist and novelist Natalia Ginzburg. Okri highlights Okigbo’s unique role as a poet who willingly joined the Nigerian Civil War, emphasizing his blend of ritual, myth, and lyricism, as well as his universalist view of writing beyond African identity. Kitamura examines Ginzburg’s integration of personal, political, and historical contexts in her work, noting her subtle yet powerful portrayal of family and national history without didacticism. Both writers underscore the importance of commitment to one’s craft and the interplay between individual experience and broader sociopolitical realities in literature.
