Abstract
This article focuses on the recording "FIOCCO: Lamentations for Holy Week," featuring compositions by Joseph-Hector Fiocco (1703–1741) performed by Ensemble Bonne Corde under cellist Diana Vinagre. The release highlights Fiocco's innovative integration of one or two cello parts into traditional vocal and basso continuo settings of the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah, blending Italian emotional chromaticism with French melodic ornamentation. The ensemble employs varied instrumental combinations, including two cellos, organ, and double bass, to convey a range of expressive moods aligned with the solemn texts, which often begin with Hebrew letters set to elaborate melodies. This recording contributes to the comparative study of late Baroque music manuscripts from Brussels and Antwerp and expands knowledge of solo cello repertoire in the Southern Low Countries.
