Abstract
The article focuses on the relationship between Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and Euripides' "Bacchae," highlighting the subtle ways in which Theseus' character in the play may reflect a denial of certain spiritual forces and aspects of humanity. The rejection of an interlude depicting Orpheus's dismemberment by Theseus is seen as potentially linked to themes in "Bacchae," particularly in their encounters with chthonic forces and the resistance to acknowledging them.
