Abstract
A recent study conducted by researchers from the University of Chester explores the role of gardens in providing women with agency and freedom during the Victorian period. Focusing on Charlotte Brontë's novel Villette, the study analyzes the protagonist's access to a forbidden garden and how it affects her emotional and psychological landscape. The research applies the 'prospect-refuge' theory to understand the characters' responses to their environment and highlights the symbolic use of the garden space. The study concludes that the garden allows the protagonist freedoms not easily found in formal indoor settings. [Extracted from the article]
