Abstract

The article focuses on the enduring legend of King Arthur and its significant influence on concepts of law and justice in Western civilization. It outlines the traditional narrative of Arthur’s rise to kingship, his establishment of the chivalrous Round Table, and his legal innovations, particularly the introduction of trial by jury as a replacement for trial by combat. The piece also highlights the historical interplay between the mythical Arthur and the real King Henry II, credited as the “father of the common law,” whose legal reforms paralleled and perhaps inspired Arthurian ideals. Ultimately, the Arthurian legend has served as a cultural symbol of justice, governance, and national identity, adapting over centuries to address societal insecurities and promote the rule of law.
