Abstract

Revisionist writing has gained critical acclaim in recent times. Apart from being a literary and creative endeavor that attracts a wide range of readership, it also brings in new avenues of interpretation to the existing narrative by often postulating relational and critical inquiry into certain pertinent issues of the present times. This paper critically interprets Popuri Lalita Kumari's (popularly known as Volga) seminal novel The Liberation of Sita (2016) from a feminist revisionist stance. Using the tool of revisionism, the paper analyzes not only how the writer gives voice and space to the marginalized characters of the epic, subverting the grand narrative, but also depicts 'sisterhood' as an emblem of collective consciousness, defining the essence of human relationships on the one hand, and advocating women empowerment through the process of liberalization on the other.
