Abstract
The article focuses on the character Silas Aloysius Weir, a young and inexperienced physician apprentice in 1830s Chestnut Hill, Pennsylvania, whose medical training at the Philadelphia College of Medicine was brief and largely theoretical. Weir struggles with fear and repugnance toward female patients and the realities of medical practice, particularly surgery and childbirth, reflecting the limited clinical experience and prevailing medical attitudes of the time. His ambition to advance through experimental surgery leads to a tragic incident involving the death of an infant patient, resulting in scandal and his forced exile to rural New Jersey. The narrative highlights the challenges of early 19th-century medical education, social class tensions, and the precarious position of physicians outside elite circles.
