Abstract

This article analyzes how Tim O'Brien's *The Things They Carried* challenges traditional gender norms by portraying vulnerability and fragility in men, particularly U.S. soldiers during the Vietnam War. It highlights shame as a motivating factor for enlistment, contrasts male soldiers with female characters like Mary Anne Bell to blur gender roles, and emphasizes the mental wounds and emotional struggles of men such as Norman Bowker. Through these elements, O'Brien critiques toxic masculinity and expands the definition of masculinity to include vulnerability, thereby reflecting shifting societal attitudes toward gender roles in the post-World War II era.
