Abstract
Walter Benjamin's "Fate and Character" (Schicksal und Charakter) was written between September and November 1919 in Lugano, Switzerland. The text was first published two years later, in the December 1921 issue of Die Argonauten (The Argonauts), a journal edited by Ernst Blass. Benjamin would later describe the essay as an attempt to "liberate two ancient words, fate and character, from terminological serfdom, and get an actual hold of their originary life (ursprünglichen Lebens)."
