Abstract

The article focuses on John Hutchinson and Isaac Newton were both devout scholars who believed that the natural world and God were inextricably linked. It mentions sceptics savaged Newton's theories on several grounds and there was no overnight conversion to his notion that gravity extends out ineluctably through empty space. It also mentions William Hogarth was unambiguously a Newtonian devotee who included several subtle references in his pictures.
