Abstract
This article focuses on an unpublished 32-page biographical profile titled "Fidel Muro, Mexican Martyr," created in the early 1940s by siblings Carlos and María de la Torre, exiled Cristeros who documented the life and martyrdom of their friend Fidel Muro, executed during the Cristero War (1926–1929). The semblanza not only memorializes Muro but also articulates the Cristero movement's vision of a Catholic Mexican nationalism opposed to the secular postrevolutionary government, reflecting a conservative religious identity that shaped a distinct strand of Mexican American cultural and political thought. The article situates this unpublished work within the broader context of Cristero diaspora literature, highlighting its role in preserving collective memory amid censorship and exile, and argues that such literature complicates conventional national literary histories by revealing alternative conceptions of Latina/o/x identity rooted in religious nationalism. Finally, it connects these historical dynamics to ongoing debates about political diversity within Latina/o/x communities and the challenges of representing that diversity in contemporary literary and cultural discourse.
