Abstract
The article focuses on a poetry project called Free Verse, featuring works by residents of Mission Institution’s Medium and Minimum security correctional facilities who participate in creative writing classes. These poems, shared with the writers’ consent, aim to connect incarcerated individuals with the broader literary community and express personal reflection and shared humanity. The project, led by Pandora’s Collective in partnership with subTerrain, emphasizes craft, peer feedback, and diverse poetic forms, with public readings supported by local cultural organizations. The featured poems explore themes of identity, loss, resilience, and hope, while respecting the privacy of the writers through the use of aliases.
