Abstract

This article astutely examines Anne Tyler's A Spool of Blue Thread (2015) to underscore how the novel is complexly reflective of the differentiated experience of ageing. The shift in parents' lives into depending on their children provides both an ambivalent experience of joy and a burden in old age. Tyler's text chronicles the issues relating to ageing within their family and also articulates what it means to undergo age-related ailments. Familial care will be seen as linking how their support manifested in ageing adults within the intricacies of their feelings. The touch of obligation in providing care injects how older adults act as resilient selves. The narrative point toward their potentiality raises assumptions on how dynamic and optimistic old age is visually portrayed in the novel. Older adults in the novel are aware of their individualistic space within their familial constraints to carry their identity. Between the thin line of death and loneliness, the text recounts the part of a lonely life led by the ageing protagonist, Red. The role of ageing in a distinctly large family is also focused on to bring out the insights of ageing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
