Abstract

This article compares and contrasts the educational philosophies of Marshall McLuhan, a North American Catholic thinker critical of Marxism, and Paulo Freire, a Brazilian educator who integrated Catholicism with Marxist ideas. Both intellectuals shared Catholic backgrounds and critiques of the Church’s societal role, yet Freire embraced Marxism as a framework for liberation and political engagement in education, while McLuhan viewed Marxism as outdated and focused more on media’s subliminal effects. The article highlights their differing approaches to education, politics, and religion, noting that despite their ideological differences, both emphasized learning beyond the classroom and the teacher’s role as a guide rather than an authoritarian figure. This juxtaposition offers insight into how Catholicism and Marxism influenced two prominent educators with distinct but occasionally overlapping perspectives.
