Abstract

The article critically examines the origins and development of slavery in the American colonies, arguing that mass African slavery was not inherent to early America but was imposed after the 1660 Restoration of the English Monarchy under King Charles II. It highlights how the monarchy and key figures, including John Locke and the Lords Proprietors of Carolina, orchestrated the establishment of a plantation economy based on hereditary slavery and oligarchic control, modeled on the brutal Barbados system. The article contrasts this with earlier colonial practices in New England, where limited and conditional servitude existed alongside significant freedoms and self-governance. It also discusses the political and economic maneuvers by the English crown to revoke colonial liberties and enforce mercantilist policies, culminating in the institutionalization of racialized slavery and the suppression of republican ideals in the southern colonies.
