Abstract
The article discusses the significant role of art historian Mary Philadelphia Merrifield in the promotion of fine arts following the October 1834 fire in the British Houses of Parliament. Topics explored include the establishment of the Royal Commission on Fine Arts after the incident, the expertise of Merrifield in Italian Renaissance art and her translation of Cennino Cennici's 15th century work "Treatise of Painting," and the recognition earned by her book "The Art of Fresco Painting."
