Abstract

This article examines the Moroccan journal Souffles (1966–1972) as a key example of a postcolonial cultural and political radicalization linked to the global upheavals around May 1968. It traces Souffles' transformation from a literary and cultural publication into a revolutionary Marxist organ advocating Maoist-inspired anti-colonial and anti-Zionist struggle amid Morocco's social unrest and pan-Arabist crisis. Central to this shift were the theoretical contributions of Abraham Serfaty and the agitational poetry of Abdellatif Laâbi, alongside influences from sub-Saharan Africa and the Francophone Caribbean, which together fueled Souffles' critique of Négritude and folklorism. The journal's embrace of orality, popular culture, and militant politics reflected a broader Global South movement toward revolutionary cultural renewal, culminating in its alignment with the Marxist-Leninist Ila al-Alam party and advocacy for armed struggle. The article situates Souffles within both regional and international contexts, highlighting its unique role in linking cultural production with radical political activism during a period of intense repression in Morocco.
