Abstract
John Lie's recent publication explores the economic, political, and social changes in Japan since the bursting of the economic bubble, focusing on the values and practices of earlier eras that have resurfaced in the age of limits. The author argues that these values, such as the artisanal ethos and ordinary pleasures of everyday life, may offer a more sustainable future in the face of rising inequality and environmental devastation. The book examines different historical regimes in Japan and their potential influence on the country's future. It also discusses the resurgence of ordinary virtues and the artisanal ethos in contemporary Japan, using examples such as sushi-making and traditional bathing practices. The author suggests that these practices can provide lessons for a more sustainable society. [Extracted from the article]
