Abstract

The article focuses on Dietrich Bonhoeffer’s role in the German resistance against National Socialism, detailing his theological background, resistance activities, and ultimate execution in 1945. Bonhoeffer, a Protestant theologian and pastor, opposed the Nazi regime from its early years, actively resisting the “German Christians” who aligned the Protestant Church with Nazi ideology. Despite official bans and persecution, he continued underground church work and joined the military intelligence service (Abwehr) to aid resistance efforts, including attempts to contact the Allies. His theological writings emphasized discipleship and following Christ as a moral imperative against injustice. Bonhoeffer was arrested in 1944, implicated in the conspiracy against Hitler, and executed at Flossenbürg concentration camp shortly before the war’s end.
