Abstract

The article focuses on the history and remnants of several "ghost routes"—planned but never fully realized or signed U.S. highways—in Pennsylvania, including U.S. Routes 622, 711, and 120. These routes were part of the 1926 American Association of State Highway Officials (AASHO) numbered system but were altered or removed due to disagreements with the Pennsylvania Department of Highways, resulting in some routes never being posted or later replaced by other highways. The article also documents physical traces of these routes and discusses the complex evolution and decommissioning of U.S. 120. Additionally, it covers recent restoration projects of historic neon signs in various locations, highlighting efforts to preserve mid-20th-century roadside and commercial signage.
