Abstract

The article discusses the challenges facing the dictionary industry, particularly focusing on Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.com. Despite a growing interest in language and increased accessibility to dictionaries, traditional lexicographers are struggling due to declining traffic, competition from AI-generated content, and changing consumer habits. Merriam-Webster has adapted by enhancing its digital presence and engaging with social media, while Dictionary.com, after a series of ownership changes, faced significant layoffs and a shift away from its original mission. The article highlights the urgent need for dictionaries to document and explain language in a rapidly evolving linguistic landscape. [Extracted from the article]
