Abstract
This article sheds light on three works by Hong Kong authors whose writing addresses the 2014-2020 protest movements in Hong Kong. K.C. Lo, whose short story collection was published in 2023, addresses the violence that took place in his city with Walter Benjamin's ‘Angelus novus’ as a reference point. Hon Lai-Chu´s essay work from 2021 is a life narrative that restores the author’s power to make meaning of her experiences, challenging prevailing authorities. Wu Yin Ching has her protagonist explain in a fictitious letter published in 2021 that, in contrast to her friend, she will not leave the context of her life, Hong Kong, despite the experiences of the protest movements. I argue that ‘formation of historical meaning’ (Joern Ruesen) occurs in all of the above texts, by organizing social belonging through different times and spaces. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
