Abstract

This article examines Jean-Jacques Rousseau's reinterpretation of Augustine's concept of self-love in his Second Discourse. Rousseau distinguishes between two forms of self-love: self-love as self-preservation and self-love as vanity. The author argues that Rousseau's rejection of the love of God and his division of self-love into good and bad forms would have been seen as controversial in the context of seventeenth-century French thought influenced by Augustine. The article also explores Rousseau's rejection of Augustine's Doctrine of Original Sin and his alternative vision of human nature. It concludes by discussing the importance of reintroducing the sacramental principle in political philosophy. [Extracted from the article]
